It wasn't long after the collapse of society. Perhaps only months. A woman (my partner?) and I were going from hut to hut, home to home rummaging for anything useful on our way to build a new life.
My son was terrified of leaving one of the huts so we took him by the hand to lead him outside and when he noticed it was alright, he stopped screaming and I asked him to look out for any piece of rope. Mainly to give him something to focus on, away from his fears.
It helped that a fourth member of our slowly growing tribe gave him a piece of meat from some giant animal he had just killed.
